Essential Post-Moving Steps

Moving Box Labeling

In this blog entry, the full-service storage service and residential moving experts here at Noah’s Ark Moving and Storage will detail the best steps to take after moving to your brand new property.

Time Organization

As soon as you finish your move, make an organized to-do list. This will help you establish a dedicated routine much faster, and allow you to make the most of your time at your new space.

Box Unpacking

First, unpack essential boxes full of items you absolutely need. Then, unpack bedroom and bathroom boxes – we recommend prioritizing setting up these rooms. Besides this, however, the good news is you can take your time unpacking boxes, doing it gradually as befits your schedule.

Home Inspection

Inspect your new property for any potential damages or things that need to be fixed. Mark down the location of water stop valves or fuse boxes, and write down the readings on your electrical and water meters. Make sure your home is outfitted with quality locks and protected from theft – as well as child-proofed, if you have a kid running around.

Mail, School, and Doctors

First, change your address officially, and change your mailing address for any subscriptions or newspapers that you may receive – as well as on any delivery platforms like Amazon. Contact and lock down a quality school for your young-ones if you have school age children with you, and try to do research to find a quality physician for you and your family to periodically see for check ups.

Car Registration

Go to your local DMV to register your motor vehicle. Usually the deadline for new State vehicle registration is between 10 days to a month. Do this as soon as possible, because the longer you wait, the easier it is to forget.

Pet and Social Acclimation

Take your pets on walks, and try to clean your place as much as possible, in order to make the move easier on your pets sense of smell and sense of space. Spend as much time as possible to reduce their stress and make them feel comfortable, and give them time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Don’t forget that humans need acclimation too! Introduce yourself to your neighbors, potential new co-workers, and stake out a local coffee shop. Even consider registering for a local class, club, or hobby group – as this is absolutely one of the best ways you can make new friends.
