Colors For Your Rooms

The great thing about a new home is that you get to renovate it as you see fit.  Depending on how much time and money you are willing to spend, this could be anywhere from knocking down walls and remaking rooms or simply repainting a few walls.

While painting is simple enough in its idea, picking the color is always difficult.  You may have an image in your head, but will it translate?  Each color evokes a response and you should choose it depending on how you want to feel in each room.

Blues & Grays

Blue is widely known as the color of calm.   While brighter blues like turquoise catch attention, shades of pale blue or gray blues have a subtler feel to them.  If you want a room that is soothing and quiet, try shades like periwinkle, cornflower, or powder blue.  Shades of light gray like aluminum and chromium work as well.  These colors work well in public areas such as the living room or the bathroom, places where you want people to feel calm.  They also work in bedrooms since it is a place of rest.

Reds & Oranges

Reds and oranges are bold statements.  They are loud and attention grabbing.  They are also very warm colors depending on the shades.  Lighter tones of orange like marigold can invoke a cozy feeling while deeper shades like persimmon can remind us of the regality of 18th century interiors.  Shades of red matched with browns also have a certain richness that reminds us of elegant old mansions.  These colors are best used for the living room area where the boldness of the color will catch the guest’s attention.

Greens & Yellows

These colors are very light and playful.  Spring green reminds us of blooming flowers and children laughing in fields of grass.  Yellow is warm like sunshine through an open window on a nice day.   These are colors that would work anywhere in the home.

Black & White

Black and white are often used when aiming for a more modern and minimalistic feel.  The colors tend to be too overwhelming by themselves.  An all-white room gives off an unlivable sterile feeling.  A completely black room is too dark and depressing.  The two of them together give off the right combination of airiness and simplicity.  You can also add an accent color if you like the idea of black & white, but find it too minimalistic.  Use a rich shade like turquoise or red or magenta to offset the two tones.
