Connecticut Fun

When you think of Connecticut, you tend to think of green grass, trees, and suburbia.  The idea of anything interesting there is a bit foreign to say the least.  Yet beneath the boring tranquility is actually a hidden treasure of activities for you to find.  Whether you’re trying to find some family friendly fun for the kids or you want some adult fun with your friends, there is something for you.

Casinos

This is perhaps the most popular Connecticut attraction.  Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun are the two largest casinos on the east coast so if you’re close by and lady luck is by your side, head to one of the two.  Book a hotel room for a mini vacation or weekend getaway.  Other than the gambling floor, both casinos have a variety of things to do when you don’t feel like gambling.  They have a wide selection of stores and restaurants.  If you have kids, let them entertain themselves in the game arcade.  If you want, grab a show at their theater or watch women’s basketball at Mohegan Sun’s arena.

Connecticut Wine Trail

Love wine?  Why not visit the vineyards in Connecticut?  Join the tour and visit 24 different vineyards on a single trail.  Admire the countryside as you sip on samples of some of the state’s best wine.  Many of the participants on the trail offer tastings and if you find that you like a certain vineyard in particular, you can always go back.  Most of them offer their own individual tours as well.

Gillette Castle State Park

When you think of castles, you think of Europe.  You think of majestic, worn down stone amidst gray fog and odd accents.  You don’t think of the Connecticut.  William Gillette, an actor in the late 80’s and early 90’s, was known for his portrayal as Sherlock Holmes.  Having all that money, he set to build his own castle on the Connecticut River, one that includes hidden mirrors.  The castle is a great place to take the kids.  Walk through the rooms on a self-guided tour and learn about the history.

Mystic Aquarium

Who needs to take a plane to SeaWorld when you can drive a few hours to Mystic Aquarium?  Check out the exhibits and learn all about marine animals.  Meet the penguins, jellyfish, seals, and more!  It’s the only place in New England that has Beluga Whales on display so don’t miss the chance.  If you are interested in the Titanic, they have an exhibit specifically dedicated to the discoveries of the shipwreck.  Watch the workers feed the sharks or catch the sea lion show.  You can even swim with the whales!

Thimble Islands Cruise

Off the shore of Connecticut are a group of small islands.  Each one has its own story and history to it.  Book a private cruise or join a public one.  Weave through the islands and listen and the Captain spins tales about pirates, love, and revenge.
