Tips for Moving Refrigerators
In this blog entry, the professional TriState area residential moving and commercial moving service team here at Noah’s Ark Moving and Storage will detail the best ways to prepare your refrigerator for transport to your new property.
How can I move my refrigerator to my new property?
- Planning – Prepare a few days before your scheduled move. Use up or donate any perishables to make cleaning the fridge easier.
- Defrosting – IF your fridge has a freezer, unplug it and defrost it 48 hours before the move. Leave the doors open to help the ice melt, and place towels and pans underneath it to catch any leaking water to prevent leaks from transport.
- Cleaning– Clean the interior surfaces of the fridge, including shelving and drawers. Use a mild cleaning solution, and dry the interior fully to prevent mold and mildew.
- Securing Shelving and Drawers – Remove all shelves and drawers and pack them separately wrapped in bubble wrap or blankets. If you’re going to leave them in the fridge, make sure they are taped to prevent movement or shifting during transport.
- Wrapping– Wrap the fridge in moving blankets to prevent dents and scratches. Secure the doors with cors and straps, but try not to tape directly on the fridge surface to avoid damaging its finish.
- Moving the Fridge – Load the fridge upright to avoid damaging the fridge compressor. Our team is trained in safely handling refrigerators and other large appliances for all types of moves.Set Up After the Move – After your move is complete, wait a few hours before plugging the fridge in to allow the compressor oil to settle in, and avoid damaging the fridge.
