DIY Organization Tips

Finding organization space in your New York City apartment can be difficult – and it’s always best to consolidate your space with clever improvised solutions. Here’s our list of 10 fantastic, affordable ways to hack your home organization, making it much more functional.

Make DIY Shoebox Dividers

You don’t need to pay for pre-made drawer dividers – simply make them with a pair of scissors and some shoeboxes. Cut the boxes in half length or width wise, just as much as you need for your space, and slide them into any drawers that you need.

Dry Erase Board

Frame a piece of fabric or wallpaper and hang it in a common area, and use a dry erase marker to write down reminders on the glass – you can even tie the marker to the board with a special piece of fabric for added flair.

Dressing Stations

Use pegboards on the inside of your closet door to organize accessories and display scarves, belts, necklaces, and jewelry. Hang a mirror as well so you can check your outfit before leaving your room.

Use taped velcro as a stuffed animal barracks

Use adhesive velcro attached to the wall as well as the back of stuffed animals to help give them a designated spot, for neatness as well as convenience whenever you want them.

Stepladder Nightstand

This stepladder nightstand can hold a lamp, your phone, and some water – lending to a minimalist sense of self-sufficiency and minimizing clutter around your sleeping area.

Use a magnet to organize your medicine cabinet

Mount a magnetic strip to the inside of your medicine cabinet door to store all metallic grooming tools like tweezers, razors, pins, or anything that might cause clutter inside the cabinet itself.

Jar Storage

Use small jars with loose items like nails, tacks, or buttons and attack the lid of every jar to the back of a shelf – it’s instant storage, that maximizes your shelf space.

Tension Rod for Cleaning Items

Use a tension rod in your cabinet underneath the sink as a place to hook on your most commonly used sprays, scrubbers, or hooked sponges for easy access (you won’t have to bend over and dig every time you need them.)
