Long Distance Moving – Tips for a Smoother Move Across Country

Long Distance Moving – Tips for a Smoother Move Across Country

With communications making the world a smaller place, many more people are making long distance moves than in the past.  Whether you are moving for work, environment, family, or other reasons, the hassle of moving a long distance can be daunting.  If you are moving across the country, there are some things you can do to make the process easier.
First, find out as much as you can about your new community.  Create a file or booklet and make sure it is easy to get to when you get to your destination.  This should include specific directions to the home or real estate office, emergency numbers for your new community, phone numbers for any contacts you have in the community, and maps showing pertinent businesses, like grocery stores, drug stores, and discount stores.  This will help you immensely if you need to pick up necessary items quickly.  Another map should include restaurant or food delivery services with phone numbers.

Second, before packing for your long distance moving experience, print out color coded stick-on moving labels for each room of the house.  These should be numbered, have a description space, and possibly have check boxes for common items for that room to make the packing process easier.  You should keep a corresponding inventory of each numbered box so you know how many items you are moving and what truck they went on.  It can be helpful to label larger items that do not fit in boxes as well.  Printed ‘Fragile’ or ‘This End Up’ labels are also great to have.

Third, put up color coded room labels when you arrive at your destination.  These should match the labels on the boxes.  This allows helpers or long distance moving professionals to unload trucks directly to the proper rooms quickly and efficiently.

Fourth, consider leaving specialty items, such as pianos, to the professionals.  With the combination of the weight and delicate nature of these instruments, amateurs usually end up hurt or with a damaged piano.

Fifth, allow for hang-ups in the long distance moving process.  Make sure you have the option for in-transit storage if you cannot get into your new home upon arrival for some reason.

If you want the ultimate in convenience and stress free long distance moving, call us at Noah’s Ark, Inc. to do all the packing and moving for you so you can relax and enjoy the journey.
