When Moving to New York

new york Movers

Moving to New York can be a very rewarding, and also a very difficult experience.  There can be a lot of things to contend with, including getting used to the hustle and bustle of city life, and the abruptness of New York City residents.  As with moving to any location, you must make sure that you consider all of the possible angles involved, so that you are prepared for any situation.  Knowing the ins and outs of New York can at first feel like an intimidating challenge, but if you are well prepared, you can make the best of moving into the illustrious area of New York.  At Noah’s Ark Moving and Storage, we want to make sure that you are ready for your big move to the Big Apple, and we have provided you with a list of tips to help you get started for the moving process. Here are some tips to consider when moving to New York.

Do Lots of Research

As with any move, doing lots of research beforehand can be a great way of understanding how you can prepare for your move to New York City.  New York can be intimidating, so make sure that you are well prepared and have an idea of what neighborhood you have considered beforehand.  Make sure that it is affordable, a safe neighborhood, and the school systems are good if you are moving with children.  Research the areas that are more accommodating to your lifestyle, and as an advantage make sure that you are located near a source of public transportation.  New York has one of the best public transportation systems in the world, and taking advantage of it can be instrumental to the success of your move.

Visit the City

Before you move, make sure you take the time to visit the city beforehand.  The city is expansive, wondrous and full exciting places, and wonderful events and experiences.  Visiting the city will also provide you with a testing ground for how to ride the MTA and the New York subway system, which can be a significant advantage if you enjoy cheap, fast and efficient travel.  The city holds the center of commerce, shopping and entertainment, and if you decide that you enjoy spending time there, then you will definitely enjoy moving there as it will become a worthwhile experience.

Visit the Boroughs

In addition to simply visiting make sure that you visit all 5 of the boroughs that New York has to offer. Each borough offers something unique, and has their own characteristics and cultural identities.  The boroughs offer a grand ethnic perspective, as well as give you the opportunity to visit various cultural regions and people that come to personify the New York Identity.  Each of the boroughs has their own identifiable traits, and to experience all of them will give you a better understanding not only of which area you would like to move into, but also what to expect.

Prepare for the Congestion

Because New York is considered an ideal destination for travel, business and luxury, there is an enormous amount of traffic in and around all the areas of the city.  Between people rushing to get to work, tourists, celebrities etc, the city is literally bustling with activity and because of that traffic can be ridiculous.  Be prepared to deal with long wait lines for events, traffic jams coming to and from the city and the hectic subway congestion of rush hour.  In your first few visits it may seem a little overwhelming, but give it time, soon you’ll be like every other native, knowing when the rights times to take certain trains are etc.  Just remember, don’t expect to find parking in the city without putting a hole in your wallet! (take public transportation whenever possible).

Be wary of High Rents

The closer you try to live towards the city the more expensive the rents will be.  Apartments in the city can be luxurious, and some of them truly are, but if you want to live within close proximity be prepared to spend a lot on rent.  Most of the high cost rents of living near New York City can be attributed to the notion of the value of available amenities, and with any great city where there is a premium of amenities, you will pay more in rent to receive the benefits of living close by.  If you can afford the high price of living close to the city by all means do it, but if the costs are too steep you’re best bet would be to move to one of the outer boroughs.

Experience the Amenities

One of the best advantages of living in New York is the abundance of available amenities at your disposal.  New York City is home to some of the most luxurious, artistic and entertaining locales in the entire country, and there are many great things to do and experience.  Some of these amenities include:

–          Fine dining and cuisine
