Moving Out Tips

Moving Out Tips

Moving can be a bittersweet experience. The extreme excitement that can come with changing your surroundings and beginning a new living situation can be exhilarating, but if you’ve enjoyed the living situation where you’ve been, leaving can be hard. Additionally, moving can be somewhat physically exhausting. However, if you want to move on to the next moment of life adventure, there are steps that you should feel prepared to take.

In this blog post, I’ll detail some of the ways that you can make your moving in experience simple, easy, and enjoyable.

Make sure to confirm all plans with your moving company

Ideally, if you’ve been planning on hiring some moving help for the day, you will have already contacted them. If you haven’t yet, pick up the phone and call them to make plans right away! If you’ve already made plans, call the mover to confirm them, and make sure to detail the full range of belongings that you need to be transported to ensure that they show up at your home with the proper equipment.

Ask family and friends for help

Moving out can be stressful, regardless of how many people are giving you a hand to help. Try recruiting your friends and family to give you assistance during your move – this is especially helpful if you haven’t hired a moving company to help you. You can even make it fun! Use music, food, and energizing drinks like soda or coffee to keep a level of high energy as you pack up your home.

Keep a stable inventory

Keeping a regular home inventory checklist is an essential way to keep track of all your possessions before and during a move. It will be extremely handy to have an accurate record on hand for any form of insurance purposes in the event of theft, fire, or any other kind of disaster. Before the movers head out, make sure to sign the inventory list, and make your own copy for your records.

Take a photo of the new home (if it’s a rental.)

If the place where you’re moving into is a rental apartment, take pictures of it before you move in, so you are protected from any claims of damage from the landlord for any damage caused before your occupancy.

Take off work on your moving day

If you’re planning on moving during a work day, make sure to request the day off in advance so that you can be there to fully supervise during the entire day from the beginning to end of the process.

Establish a payment with your mover in advance

If you haven’t predetermined the credit card payment in advance with your mover, make sure to prepare a money order, cashier’s check, or cash together for the final payment – plus tip. If the movers have done a good job, it’s customary to provide a tip from 10 to 15 percent of the total moving fee.
