Gearing up for NYC Winter

Gearing up for NYC Winter

The mercury is dropping and you can see your breath in the air. Signs that winter is coming. New York City has a normal amount of Northeast chill between late November and March, when Spring starts. January’s average around 36 degrees – but the wind chill makes it feel colder. Sure it’s no Anchorage, Alaska – but it’s still pretty damn cold. Here’s our tips for gearing up for a bonafide NYC winter.

Warm Clothes

We really mean warm. No lightweight jackets here. The warmest material is puffy jackets, down coats- and waterproof boots are a must. We recommend getting a heavy parka, with a lighter jacket to wear underneath depending on the weather. This is normal, practical fashion in an NYC winter. When you have the right boots and coat, make sure to get warm hats, gloves, scarves – and a sweater for when you’re lounging indoors.

Subway

It’s simply not worth waiting outside for a bus. The subway is warm since it’s underground in most areas, so it’s always warmer than walking or waiting on the street. If it’s only 9 degrees in January, it’ll be at least 20 underground. We recommend saving cash to take taxis if you’re doing crosstown commutes on days when it’s simply too cold to walk or wait for the bus.

Stay Social

Cozy warm nights indoors with friends are one major benefit of winter. Try cooking a warm seasonal menu with hearty soups and carb filled pasta. You could even have a potluck! And if you don’t feel like cooking, simply order in delivery and enjoy some wine or beer with friends. No food will replace the warm social feeling of a group of people you really vibe with.

Learn to love the cold

This might take some work if you’re from the South, but we promise it’s possible. Find ways to enjoy the cold – from Central Park in the beautiful snow, ice skating, snowman building – or even a brisk and refreshing walk.

Hibernate

Winter is prime Netflix and chill season. Find a great TV show to binge watch, read some excellent books, get work done in the house, or utilize the time inside the gym. There’s tons of ways to make the freezing weather both fun and productive – so by the time it’s Spring, you’ll feel accomplished enough to enjoy that delicious outdoor leisure time.

Go on a trip

We recommend flying out of the city in January or February for a break from the freezing cold that can be both relaxing and reinvigorating. We highly stress the importance of going to a WARM location – save those trips to Antarctica for the Summer, when you’ll have a toasty home in New York to look forward to. Visiting a naturally warm location (ideally by a beach) is the perfect solution for coping and learning to value the magic of a New York City Winter.
