Moving Out of State: Moving to a Foggy City

Fog can be described as ice crystals suspended in the air. Doesn’t that sound nice? But, if you’re planning on moving out of state to a foggy city, like San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, or near Cape Disappointment, Washington, and you’ve never negotiated substantial fog before, here are some tips to get you through the mist.

1. There is more moisture in fog than you may think. A damp cold can be a bone-chilling cold. If you’re not used to walking through ground clouds you might want to invest in a new nylon or polyester windbreaker. You’ll need it. These materials are especially designed for shedding beads of moister which may quickly accumulate and soak into your other jackets. Have you heard of June gloom? Cities like San Francisco can yield very little sun even in the summer, so make sure you’re prepared. Nobody likes a wet blanket. Yes, some foggy cities can feel freezing in the summer. That’s how it goes.

2. Rust. If you’re moving to a place like Cape Disappointment you may experience up to 100 days of fog a year and there is very little we can do for you. Sorry. How disappointing. What is rust? Rust is an iron oxide which forms very easily on metals that are subjected to liquids. Fortunately there is a decent market for anti-rust sprays that you may need to use on gutters, mailboxes and other areas affected with direct or indirect moister for long periods of time. Don’t forget about your vehicles. Simple washing to prevent surface dirt and light waxing will go great lengths in helping maintain the exterior of your vehicle.

3. Driving in fog. You may remember these rules from your driving tests, but if doesn’t hurt to refresh yourself.

  • Reduce your speed. Driving too fast affects reaction time. It won’t make the fog billow over your windshield and disappear any faster.
  • Use wipers and defrosters liberally. Provide yourself with the most visibility possible.
  • Drive with your low beam headlights on. (High Beams reflect the ice crystals of the moister and inhibit visibility.)
  • Be patient.

4. Foggy climates can cause depression. If you are prone to depression, make certain that you’ve many ways to get out of the foggy funk. Here are a few reminders that can set your mood right after moving into a foggy area.

  • Get in a routine. Depression can take you out of your routine. Build a new routine if you have to and get back on track.
  • Exercise. It’s no surprise that exercise leads to long-term benefits that fight depression. Physical activity can promote healthy brain function.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids could help ease depression. If you’re in a coastal area take advantage of the fresh catch, or grab a bundle of avocados on your way home.
  • Try to have fun. Make time for things you enjoy. After all you just moved to a new home. Things maybe stressful, but think of this as an exciting time instead. Go explore your new surroundings.
